Zehn Jahre Browser-Duelle: InnoGames feiert The West-Jubiläum

Am 30. April 2008 startete das zweite Browser-Game der Hamburger Free-to-Play-Veteranen Innogames. Zum Geburtstag von The West erinnert sich das Team, nostalgische Spieler bekommen einen Classic-Server.

"Der wilde, wilde Westen fängt gleich hinter Hamburg an": Als Innogames Ende April 2008 mit "The West" ihr zweites Spiel in den Browser brachten, residierte das kleine Entwicklerstudio noch in zwei überschaubaren Büroräumen in Stade. Gerade erst hatten die Gründer angefangen, Mitarbeiter einzustellen, sie beschäftigten sich mit der Internationalisierung ihres Debütprodukts "Die Stämme" und eben der Veröffentlichung eines zweiten Titels. "The West" sollte beweisen, "dass wir mehr sind als eine One-Hit-Wonder-Company", wie sich Innogames-Chef Hendrik Klindworth in einem Gespräch mit gamecity:Hamburg erinnert. Das dürfte zehn Jahre später wohl niemand mehr bezweifeln.

Eine Dekade nach dem Debüt wird das Wilde Westen-Browsergame immer noch leidenschaftlich gespielt. Rund 19 Millionen Nutzer haben sich bis dato in "The West" registriert, und es kommen immer noch neue Spieler dazu - hauptsächlich durch Mundpropaganda aus dem Freundeskreis. "Wir betreiben kein aktives Marketing, aber wir haben eine sehr loyale Community, unsere Spielerzahl ist sehr stabil", sagt Klindworth. In 18 Sprachen wird "The West" betrieben, das Gros der Spieler stammt aus Europa, aus Frankreich und Deutschland.

Der Wilde Westen ist eine eher selten genutzte Kulisse für Computer- und Videospiele, und das war einer der Gründe, warum man sich damals bewusst für dieses Szenario entschied. "Wir kamen vom Film her darauf, dass das Thema interessant sein kann", erläutert Hendrik Klindworth einen weiteren wichtigen Gedankengang. Aber nicht nur beim Setting, auch in puncto Spielmechanik wollte man Dinge anders machen als in "Die Stämme", beispielsweise mehr RPG-Elemente integrieren. Das Jubiläum heute hatte man dennoch nicht im Visier: "Das Spiel sollte zwar Spielspaß über Monate hinweg bietet. Aber wir wussten natürlich nicht, wie groß es werden wird. Dass es zehn Jahre werden, war dann aber schon eine Überraschung für uns."

Dass "The West" so lange erfolgreich ist und stets profitabel war, liegt nicht zuletzt an der unablässigen Unterstützung des Titels durch seine Macher. "Wir haben immer wieder neue Inhalte hinzugefügt, tausende von Quests, immer neue Items", so Klindworth. Trotz eines überschaubaren Teams wurde auch kontinuierlich die Spielmechanik erweitert und die Technik verbessert. "The West" sieht heute natürlich ganz anders aus als beim Start 2008.

Um den "The West"-Veteranen - es gibt noch einige aktive Spieler, die seit Anfang an dabei sind - die Erinnerung an die Zeiten damals ein wenig leichter zu machen und um Neueinsteigern die Möglichkeit zu geben, das Spiel in seiner ursprünglichen Form zu erleben, hat Innogames einen Classic-Server aufgesetzt. Auf diesem lässt sich das Spiel ab sofort bis zum 5. Juni in seiner Version 1.0 erleben.

Aber auch in der modernen "The West"-Version wird das Jubiläum gefeiert, mit einer Quest-Reihe, die sich um die Historie des Titels dreht. Und was das Team über das Jubiläum denkt und welche Erinnerungen dazu in den Verantwortlichen aufsteigen, zeigt ein Geburtstagsvideo auf YouTube. Da bleibt uns nur noch, "Alles Gute" und viel Erfolg für die nächsten zehn Jahre zu wünschen.
