School Internship Games January 2024: Learned a lot

For three weeks, 16 young people from Hamburg schools were able to get a taste of the games industry in a games internship. They visited two Hamburg game studios and the HAW Hamburg.

The internship program included insights into the range of professions, career paths, and daily routines in the games industry for the 9th-grade students.

At Fishlabs and InnoGames, the students were able to gain impressions directly from the Hamburg studios and games production on-site and learned useful details about game design, audio design, producing, QA, product management, and marketing & data mining from the studios' experts. At HAW Hamburg, students informed the pupils about the professional field of (game) illustration and provided playful insights into studying and possible career paths.

In the third week, the young students produced their own game in a two-day game jam with support from indie game studio Tiny Roar and were able to put what they had experienced and learned into practice. The most important aspect of the internship for the students, apart from the many experiences, was learning new skills, implementing their ideas, and building up their first portfolio. During the internship, the participants were accompanied by media educators from the Initiative Creative Gaming

The enthusiasm for the games industry was evident in the final presentation of all participants and we were impressed by the enthusiasm and commitment of the students. Perhaps we will see some of them again in Hamburg's games industry soon.

The next internship games will take place in summer 2024. More info: schulpraktikum-games.de.
