Rockfish auf Reboot

Michael Schade von den Hamburger „Everspace“-Machern Rockfish Games spricht in Dubrovnik über erfolgreiche Social Media- und Influencer-Arbeit.

Der Veranstaltungsraum im Sheraton-Hotelkomplex südlich der kroatischen Mittelmeerperle Dubrovnik ist brechend voll, als Michael Schade, Mitgründer des Hamburger Entwicklerstudios Rockfish Games, zu einem der ersten Vorträge auf der Reboot Develop-Entwicklerkonferenz ansetzt.

In nur fünf Jahren ist Veranstaltung massiv gewachsen, Redner aus aller Welt liefern vom 19 bis 21. April ein buntes Konferenzprogramm rund um Game-Design, -Technik und -Business, und Zuhörer aus ganz Europa genießen die Themenvielfalt und die direkte Atmosphäre. Altgediente Triple-A-Angehörige sind auf der Reboot ebenso gut aufgehoben wie aufstrebende Indie-Entwickler - an Letztere richtet sich Schades Vortrag vornehmlich.

"Social Media and influencer marketing on a budget" ist das Thema des Rockfish-Manns. Am lebenden (und sehr vitalen) Objekt - der mittlerweile über ein halbes Millionen Mal verkauften Weltraumoper "Everspace" - demonstriert er, wie sich überschaubare Marketing-Mittel bestmöglich auf YouTube, Twitch und Facebook einsetzen lassen, wie man via Reddit, Imgur und Twitter die Aufmerksamkeit für sein Produkt geschickt erhöht.  

"Die größte Herausforderung für Indies ist Marketing, die Entdeckbarkeit", sagt Schade im Gespräch mit Gamecity:Hamburg. "Du musst auch selber was machen, kannst nicht nur darauf hoffen, dass Steam oder Sony Dich featuren." Mit seinen Praxisbeispielen zieht Michael Schade die vornehmlich jungen Zuhörer in seinen Bann, liefert ihnen handfeste Tipps und Ideen, wie sie ihr eigenes Produkt mit überschaubarem finanziellem Aufwand sichtbar machen. Sein Credo: "Hast Du ein geiles Game und mieses Marketing, bringt das nichts. Hast ein ordentliches Spiel, aber wirklich gutes Marketing, dann gibt’s zumindest die Chance auf Erfolg."

Michael Schade liegen die Indies am Herzen, nicht nur, weil er selbst ein unabhängiges Studio mitgegründet hat und leitet, sondern auch, weil sie für ihn die Zukunft der Branche sind. Auch in der Hansestadt. "Die jungen Studios, die tolle Sachen machen, die oft mit ihren ersten Titeln schon große Erfolge feiern, auf denen sollten wir aufbauen. Mein Gefühl war, dass sich zehn Jahre lang in Hamburg alles um Free-to-Play gedreht hat, und das ist jetzt ein Problem für Hamburg. Der heutige Wachstumsmarkt sind die Indies. Und in dem Bereich, glaube ich, könnte Hamburg mehr tun."

Allerdings hebt Schade, der für seine meinungsstarken und direkten Aussagen bekannt ist, auch gegenüber den Hamburger Indies den Finger. "Barrel Roll, warum sind die nicht hier? Mit ihrem Titel wären die hier super aufgehoben gewesen", sagt er. Für ihn ist die Teilnahme an Konferenzen tägliches Brot und grundlegend für das Marketing seines Spiels und das Knüpfen von Kontakten in alle Welt. Und wenn man sich diesen runden Spieleindustrie-Event an der kroatischen Steilküste so ansieht, lässt sich nur zustimmen: Die Reboot sollte man als Branchenangehöriger zweifellos auf seinem Veranstaltungszettel haben. Wer die Konferenz und Schades Vortrag verpasst hat: Beides wird sich mit Sicherheit in Zukunft wieder erleben lassen.
