Daedalic wird den magischen Multiplayer-Spaß „Witch It“ von Barrel Roll Games vermarkten und bei der Konsolenportierung helfen. Wir haben die Indies aus Lurup zu ihrem überraschenden Hit und der nicht minder erstaunlichen Partnerschaft befragt.

Diese Nachricht kam letzte Woche plötzlich: Der mittlerweile alteingesessene Hamburger Entwickler und Publisher Daedalic Entertainment nimmt das Multiplayer-Spiel "Witch It" des Indie-Studios Barrel Roll Games unter seine Fittiche, wird sich um Vermarktung und Distribution des Titels kümmern und die Portierung auf PS4 und Xbox One unterstützen. Das ungewöhnliche Spiel lässt zwei Fraktionen in einer farbenfrohen Mittelalterwelt gegeneinander antreten: Hexen, die sich in Alltagsgegenständen verstecken, und Jäger, die ihnen hinterherjagen, sie suchen und unter Zeitdruck ausschalten sollen.

Doch warum sucht sich Barrel Roll Games, die aus eigener Kraft "Witch It" zu einem Steam-Hit gemacht haben, einen Partner wie Daedalic? Und wie kommt man überhaupt auf so eine schräge Idee? Wir haben bei Mitgründer und Studiochef Christoph Rienäcker nachgefragt.

gamecity: Hamburg: Wie viele Leute seid Ihr bei Barrel Roll Games?
Christoph Rienäcker: Wir sind momentan 4 Leute, planen aber dieses Jahr noch einen weiteren Programmierer einzustellen, der uns unter anderem bei der Portierung auf die Konsolen unterstützen soll.
 
Ist "Witch It" Euer erstes Werk? Und wie lange habt Ihr bis zur Early Access-Veröffentlichung im Mai 2017 daran gearbeitet?
Unser Team kennt sich schon lange und hat bereits früher in anderen Studios gemeinsam Spiele entwickelt. Mit "Witch It" haben wir uns entschlossen, Barrel Roll Games zu gründen. Wir haben vom frühen Prototyp bis jetzt gut eineinhalb Jahre an "Witch It" entwickelt.

Setting und Mechanik von "Witch It!" sind ja recht ungewöhnlich. Was war Eure vornehmliche Inspirationsquelle?  
Das grundlegende Spielprinzip gab es bereits in Form des Mods "Prop Hunt" für das Spiel "Garry's Mod". Wir haben es uns zur Aufgabe gemacht eine eigenständige Version davon zu entwickeln, die mehr geschliffen und viel einfacher zugänglich ist. Außerdem fanden wir, dass man die Spielidee super mit dem magischen Setting erklären kann.

Wie erklärt Ihr Euch den großen Erfolg von "Witch It!" auf Steam?
Auf der ganzen Welt kennt jedes Kind das Prinzip des Versteckspiels, damit ist die Mechanik sofort nachvollziehbar. "Witch It" ist außerdem recht YouTube-tauglich, deshalb konnte "Witch It" schon eine ansehnliche Menge an YouTube-Views sammeln. Da das bisher unser fast einziger Marketingkanal ist, glauben wir, dass das im direkten Zusammenhang mit dem Erfolg steht.

Was erhofft Ihr Euch von Daedalic als Publisher?
Daedalic wird uns vor allem mit Marketing-Knowhow unterstützen können. Das war bisher für uns als kleines Team nicht nur schwierig zu stemmen, sondern wir besitzen nicht so viel Erfahrung im Bereich Marketing. Außerdem bekommen wir von Daedalic auch Unterstützung für die Konsolenportierungen. Wir können uns alles in allem noch besser auf das Spiel selbst fokussieren. Und wir denken, dass wir als Studios voneinander lernen können, da Daedalic im Gegenzug mit "Witch It" in den Bereich "Games as a Service" einsteigen möchte.

Beschleunigt der jetzige Deal die Veröffentlichung einer finalen Version des Spiels?
Der Deal wird den Full Release der Steam-Version nicht direkt beschleunigen, aber definitiv den Release der Konsolenversionen.

Wie ist der Kontakt mit Daedalic zustande gekommen? Wer ist auf wen zugegangen?
Wir haben uns beim Deutschen Entwicklerpreis 2017 kennengelernt. Andreas Suika war der Laudator in der Kategorie "Most Wanted" und hat uns den Preis verliehen. Dadurch sind wir ins Gespräch gekommen und haben gemerkt, dass eine Kooperation durchaus Sinn macht. 

Hexe oder Jäger: Welche Seite macht mehr Spaß?

Was hat als Kind beim Versteckenspielen mehr Spaß gemacht…? Anfänglich auf jeden Fall Hexe, wenn man länger spielt und besser wird, sorgen tolle Erfolgserlebnisse als unerbittlicher Jäger für viel Freude. Beides macht Spaß!
