Goodgame Studios is a leading developer and publisher of mobile and browser games in Hamburg, specializing in the free-to-play sector with over 500 million registered users worldwide and part of the Stillfront Group. This year, the company celebrates ten years of their game Goodgame Empire, which is still ongoing and growing. Goodgame Empire is a browser game set in the Middle Ages, where the player can build a mighty kingdom and conquer the online world.

We spoke with Oleg Rößger, CEO and Managing Director of Goodgame Studios, about the game and their experiences over the last ten years.

Overview over the Goodgame Empire Map

Ten years of Goodgame Empire - what is your winning formula, what is it that makes this game so unique?

In depth strategy within a medieval setting and an outstanding social connection between players makes Goodgame Empire special. The game is easy to learn, but hard to master and therefore it offers a challenging progression towards its fans. In addition, we offer monthly content updates and regular in-game events that keep our community active. Listening to our dedicated fanbase and mastering the challenges of keeping the game balanced is our formula to a long-standing live operations product.

In the last ten years, browser-game developers and publishers have had to adapt to the increased competition in mobile, consoles, and PC. In the last 1,5 years, the Covid19 pandemic has posed new challenges to digital companies. What is your strategy to stay ahead in the demanding gaming market?

Our core corporate blueprint consists of a healthy symbiosis between streamlined production processes with a deep dive on data analytics, as well as a subtle community listening and reliable in-house full-service teams, focusing on sustainable free-to-play quality. We have a continuous approach to master technological advancements and have implemented a strategy that balances continuous evolution on the international gaming market. Even sudden emerging events, such as the Covid19 pandemic, have been managed in a circumspectly way to keep our staff safe, while having the continuing ability to focus on our products.

Goodgame Empire celebrates 10 years!

The City of Hamburg is your home base. When you think back to the beginning and take a look at today, why is Hamburg the ideal location for you?

Our former founders are Hamburg based and Nordic by nature. Therefore, it was a heartfelt wish to establish Goodgame Studios at our beloved harbor city. There are many supporting tech and media companies across the city that provide us a perfect location to succeed with our business in this wonderful city till today.
