School Internship Games
Supporting the industry of tomorrow is an important part of our mission, which is why we organise the "Internship Games" in cooperation with the Intitiative Creative Gaming, HAW Hamburg and local studios. In this internship, students from the 9th grade of Hamburg's schools have the opportunity to gain insights into different jobs in the industry and are prepared to choose a career in games after graduating.
As part of the internship program that runs for three weeks, students get the opportunity to visit various studios and look into different fields. They also work on their personal projects and present them at the end of the internship to an audience from participating game studios. The entire time they are accompanied by instructors from the initiative Creative Gaming.
Usually, the internship takes place twice a year, once in winter and once in summer. The internship is recognized by schools as the mandatory internship required by the curriculum. Up-to-date information on internship periods, application deadlines and more can be found at http://schulpraktikum-games.de/

FAQ
- Who is an internship in the games industry a good fit for? ↓
The games industry and its tasks are diverse, so an insight into the industry is worthwhile for anyone with a passion for video games! There are more technology-focused areas such as programming, but also plenty of room for creativity, for example in the 2D or 3D art departments. If you have a knack for copywriting, you might also be interested in Narrative Design, Social Media or Marketing.
- How do I find an internship in the Hamburg games industry? ↓
Internships for school students are usually not advertised on the website of the games companies (unlike mandatory internships for university students). Therefore, it is best to take a look at the various companies in the Hamburg games industry and send your application to the companies that interest you. Some companies also inform you directly in the website section "Jobs/Careers" whether they can offer internships for students.
A good overview is the Company Index on our own website, where a lot of game companies from Hamburg are registered. It is also worth paying attention to which companies offer apprenticeships or dual studies. These companies have training officers who can usually also take care of student interns, which increases the likelihood that they will offer such internships at all.In addition, some local studios are collaborating with the Initiative Creative Gaming and HAW Hamburg and us to offer a joint internship program once or twice a year. Find more info on that here.
You can also introduce yourself and your search for an internship on our Discord Server in the #job-board. Please keep in mind that you need to be at least 13 to sign up for Discord.
- When can I apply for a school internship in the games industry? ↓
Be sure to plan enough in advance and start looking for interesting companies a few months before your intended internship date, as it can take a while to hear back.
If you're interested in applying for the school internship by the initiative Creative Gaming mentioned above, keep an eye on their channels for the latest info around application deadlines.
- What does a school internship in the games industry entail? ↓
The daily tasks vary from company to company, but as an intern you will usually get an insight into the different areas of game development, such as level design, art and sound design. Especially in Quality Assurance, where the games are put through their paces, interns can often lend a hand, as a fresh look at the game is always helpful.
- Does Gamecity Hamburg offer school internships? ↓
Unfortunately, we as Gamecity Hamburg cannot offer school internships. Together with Creative Gaming and other Hamburg companies, we support the Games school internship described above, but a visit at our offices is not part of the program.
