Hamburg Games Conference: 5 Things to Do in the City
Are you visiting our beautiful city for the Hamburg Games conference? We recommend to stay a while and explore some of the unique sights Hamburg has to offer. After all, it is one of the most popular cities to visit in Europe. Here are five things you should do when travelling to town for the Hamburg Games Conference (besides visiting the conference of course)
1. A League of its Own: Miniatur Wunderland
With the Miniatur Wunderland you're not just exploring the city, you can basically discover the entire world. In this huge interactive exhibition, there are hundreds of lovingly hand-crafted dioramas in miniature sizes. A great number of famous places have been recreated, such as Mount Rushmore, Area 51, Castle Schwanenstein, the Elbphilharmonie, Mount Vesuvius and the Colosseum. In each area, you will find countless little jokes and easter eggs. Some are even games-related, like the Octopath Traveller 2 campfire in the american area.
2. Hitch a Ride on the Ferry
While there is the classical harbour trip, in which you get a guided tour on a boat, you can also opt for taking the public transport ferry. With a regular HVV ticket, you can board the ferry at the Landungsbrücken and hitch a ride to Övelgönne (more on that later), Teufelsbrück or the other side of the river Elbe, so you can take a look at the massive cargo ships up close. Here's some more info.
3. Exploring Övelgönne
If you took the ferry to Övelgönne or are still near Altona/Ottensen, where the conference takes place, we highly recommend a walk down to the "Museum Harbour" and through Övelgönne. This leads right along the river, past an assortment of boats and quaint little houses. If you want to, you can even walk on the beachfront. You'll end up near Teufelsbrück, where you can take the ferry back to the Museumshafen again. Afterwards, we recommend stopping by one of the lovely Cafés in Ottensen, such as the Knuth, Tide or Von der Motte.
4. Hamburg's Silver Screens
As it's still Oscar season during the week of the conference, why not plan a night at the movies? There are several great cinemas in Hamburg that show films in German and English. If you're staying in Altona, you should check out the Zeise Cinemas. Located in an old factory, they have the charm of an old-school cinema and a great selection of indie films in English with German subtitles.
The second option is right near the central option and shows blockbusters of all kinds in English: the Savoy. While this cinema only has one screen, it's very spacious, has a great sound system and offers a wonderful movie experience overall.
5. Unique Opportunity: The German Creative Economy Summit
Last but not least: maybe one conference wasn't enough? You're in luck, because the German Creative Economy Summit is taking place on March 6 and 7 in Hamburg as well! So you can hop right over and connect with people from other creative industries while getting new input from beyond the gaming industry horizon. If you want to participate in both events, just get in touch with hgc@super-crowd.com, to secure a special deal.
