Three Questions to: Crumbling on their Release Day
Crumbling has been with Gamecity Hamburg from the start: Part of the first round of our Games Lift Incubator in 2020, they then convinced the jury of the Prototype funding in 2021. In addition, we have fond memories of sharing a booth at different conventions with the lovely Crumbling Team - so we are beyond excited about the release of this VR gem on January 18 and took the opportunity to speak with Ole about his (game dev) adventure.
It was such a thrilling journey to see your game come together! What were the most significant challenges during the years of development and how did you overcome them?
The release is here and I am beyond excited! When I started this project almost five years ago I didn't realize how long it would take. The scale kept growing, the goal of finishing it kept moving away and more and more resources had to be committed. This can start feeling like the metaphorical frog in boiling water. But my friends and family believed in me and the longer it took the more I felt like I just had to prove to everyone that it could work. It wouldn't have been possible without the programs from Gamecity and funding opportunities which always came just in time before I would have had to abandon the project.
We've seen your progress with the game for a while and worked with you in many programs and events. Did you learn or receive anything from our programs that you couldn't have had otherwise?
The most important thing I took from all the training and programs of Gamecity is the network of people and how to cultivate it. Only through that did I meet all the great artists that made Crumbling what it is. And without those contacts in the world of game development, I wouldn't have had a chance to get the funding to finish it.
Do you have a favourite character/action figure in the game? Also, what was your favourite toy as a child?
I think my favorite character in the game is the squirrel that shoots explosive nuts from its spring-loaded tail catapult. As a child I used to play with LEGOs a lot and build all kinds of nonsensical toys, so this fits right in.
Crumbling is a lovely third-person VR roguelike game, in which you grab your favorite action figures and lead them into battle. It's now available on Steam and Meta Quest. Learn more about Ole's journey with Gamecity in the article below.
