School Internship Games January 2025: Pupils discover games industry in Hamburg companies

During a three-week internship, 15 9th grade students from Hamburg gained insights into the various job profiles and companies in the games industry. We visited them for their final presentation and found out what they learned.

For the 7th time since 2021, Hamburg games companies have joined forces with Initiative Creative Gaming e.V., HAW Hamburg and Gamecity Hamburg to realize the School Internship Games. Twice a year, this cross-company internship offers a group of 9th grade students a realistic impression of the working environment in the games industry. During the internship weeks, the participants get to know various job profiles and career paths, complete small practice-oriented exercises related to video game development and form initial contacts with games companies from Hamburg. They were supported by media educators from Initiative Creative Gaming, e.V., who offered the young people further opportunities to become active with and in games after the internship.

The interns started at InnoGames, where they completed their first practical exercises and got to know the professional fields of game design, art design (2D/3D), game development and apprenticeships at InnoGames. They also visited the GamesLAB at HAW Hamburg and learned more about game design as a field of study and possible careers in the industry in conversations with the Games Master students.

The second week started at HAW Hamburg, this time with an insight into the field of illustration. After that, it was time for a change of perspective: the young people spent the next three days at Fishlabs and learned a lot about animation, the differences and interplay between game design and technical design and were able to gain an insight into the world of quality assurance. The week ended with a practice-oriented game jam at InnoGames, where the students were able to directly apply what they had learned. The third week brought another change of scenery: Playa Games opened its doors and provided informative insights into the company and the professional fields of narrative design and project management. The final event was a big presentation by the pupils at InnoGames, where they presented their experiences to representatives from all participating companies and were ceremoniously awarded their internship certificates. The conclusion: this year, too, the students really got stuck in, gave free rein to their creativity - and had a lot of fun doing it!
