Photon develops MMO Backend
Hamburg-based developer Photon develops real-time multiplayer technology and global cloud infrastructure used by studios across different platforms and engines. Over the past several years, the team has also been building a dedicated backend for seamless, server-authoritative MMO worlds. Find out more about the technology in our short Q&A.

Photon CTO Christof Wegmann explains why the technology was built, what it could offer studios and why the next step is not another demo, but a full game developed with the right partner.
Why is Photon developing a dedicated MMO technology?
Because a seamless, server-authoritative world spread across many machines cannot be built cleanly from the usual building blocks. We wanted to find out whether it works better when latency, authority and node boundaries are part of the architecture from day one, instead of problems you optimise away later.
What are the advantages for developers in using it?
One world instead of many separate servers. No loading screens, no visible boundaries. The server runs in Go, the client library is written in C++, and it can be integrated into any engine. This allows a studio to focus more on the game instead of spending years on R&D, building its own MMO infrastructure first.
What are your next steps in development?
We are looking for a studio to build a full MMO with us on this technology. Not a demo, not a showcase, a real title. We want to see how the tech holds up in an actual game, and decide where it goes from there.
