Game Starter - Game Scouting

Gamecity
September 30, 2025 6.00 pm – 7.30 pm
Meet three game scouts to learn about their jobs and what they would have liked to know when they first started out.

Hamburg is not only a hotspot for the development of computer games, but also for numerous vocational schools and universities that offer courses specifically for future professionals in the games industry. For students and career starters, the exchange with experts in the games industry is essential in order to know the requirements in the individual disciplines and to prepare for them. The Game Starter is the perfect opportunity for such an exchange.

For this instalment of Game Starter on September 30, we will be talking about the magic of Game Scouting. How do you go about finding the next hit for your label? What kind of experience do you need for this job? What does the job look like, aside from a packed calendar at trade fairs?

Three industry experts will talk about their careers, their everyday work life as well as what career starters who are interested in becoming Scouts in the games industry should know. There will also be time for your own questions later on!

Our guest experts for Game Scouting are:

  • Frank Meijer, Game Scout at Focus Entertainment
  • Reese Wright, Senior Producer at Devolver Digital
  • Vlad Calu, Game Scout at Bright Gambit

The event is free of charge. Participants can ask their questions via chat. All you need is a device that can play the live stream, chat, and a stable internet connection. No webcam or microphone is required.

Here's what we learned:

1) There is no formal education or straight path to becoming a Game Scout. Instead, it is a position that you'll often have to carve out for yourself. This means you can get into this field from any other position in the industry, but you'll definitely need a lot of experience, industry knowledge and strong instincts.

2) Major parts of this job are travelling (a good 10% of work time), market analysis, and data management.

3) If you want your game to be scouted, be on LinkedIn - or, even better, have a reliable way to contact you on your website, such as an email address that you check regularly. Game Scouts need a way to reach you! Want to know even more about how Game Scouting works? You can find the recording of our panel on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Rruwi9wYx0
